Speakers

Kristen Kit is a dual-sport athlete, who sees sport as an opportunity for social change. She cares deeply about achieving gender parity in sport and believes there is an opportunity to redefine what it means to be an athlete.

Kristen began her rowing career in St. Catharines, Ontario in 2002 and earned her first Maple Leaf in 2009 with Canada’s Under-23 Women’s eight. Since then, she has coxed for Canada at 2 Under-23 World Championships, 5 World Cups, 5 World Championships, 2 Paralympic and one Olympic Games – bringing home a total of 11 international medals for Canada in both able-bodies and para-rowing events. This includes Canada’s first-ever medal in rowing at the 2016 Paralympics and most recently Canada’s win in the women’s eight at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Off the water, you can find Kristen perfecting her craft on her bike. She believes that elite racing of any sort helps her understand what her rowing team mates experience in the boar, and elevates her game for international racing. Her path to an Olympic Gold Medal had its fair share of obstacles, and the key to her success is her optimism. She brings this optimism and belief that obstacles create opportunity to all corners of her life including the national team training centre. In 2016, Kristen took part in Canadian Senate proceedings to change the Canadian national anthem to use gender-neutral language, resulting in a parliamentary bill that successfully passed in 2018.

Dr Tracey Vlahovic is a Clinical Professor at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, PA and is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She has been at Temple University for 15 years seeing patients, teaching, and doing research. She is the first American female podiatrist to be a Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow, Scotland. She was the first podiatrist in the USA to complete a fellowship in podiatric dermatology from St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown, PA and currently teaches the Dermatology course at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. She has won over 20 teaching awards including “Clinician of the Year” and “Teacher of the Year” by her students. She has lectured across the US, has authored many articles in peer-reviewed journals, written two books, and is involved in multiple clinical research trials for various dermatological therapies and devices.

Dr. Kerry Zang started practicing in 1970 and is the founder of the Arizona Institute of Footcare Physicians. He is Diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons and Chairman of

Axolotl Biologix’s Medical Advisory Board. An innovator in his field, he has recently developed a new, non-surgical treatment protocol for neuropathy of the feet. He has designed implants and surgical devices that are currently being used by surgeons across the country. Dr. Zang is also the co-author of several papers, including a placebo-controlled randomized study on Low-Level Laster Therapy at 635nm for Treatment of Chronic Plantar Fasciitis published in The Journal of Foot and Ankle surgery. Respected among physicians for his unique diagnostic skills, he is often consulted on complicated and challenging cases. During his years in practice, he has learned that one of the more important aspects of treating patients is listening.

Rose Raizman’s nursing career spans more than 20 years in a variety of nursing positions including staff nurse, educator, supervisor, faculty, researcher, special project coordinator and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Canada and Israel. Currently she is applying her passion for helping people to obtain and maintain optimal level of health as a wound care NP at Scarborough Health Network, a community hospital in Ontario, Canada. In addition to her clinical work, Rose likes to be involved in research. Her most recent research was about improving skin health of ostomy patents using ceramide infused barrier. And currently Rose is researching Low Level Laser in accelerating healing of wounds of different ethiologies.

Rose received her BA in Nursing from Tel-Aviv University, in Tel-Aviv, Isreal, her M. Med. Sc. from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, her Enterostomal Therapy Certification from the CAET Nursing Education Program in Ontario, Canada, and her M.Sc.N PHNP from York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Sheldon Nadal received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in 1975. He earned his four year Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree in Cleveland in 1979 and completed his residency in Philadelphia in 1980. While in Philadelphia he also learned techniques of minimally invasive foot surgery.

The podiatrist attends several podiatric medical conferences each year in order to stay up to date with most current treatments and surgical techniques. He has lectured on foot surgery on multiple occasions.

Dr. Tim Dutra is an Assistant Professor in Biomechanics & Sports Medicine at the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. He serves as podiatric consultant for Intercollegiate Athletics at University of California, Berkeley. He was past podiatric consultant to the Golden State Warriors Basketball Team. Dr. Dutra is a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academies of Practice/ Podiatric Medicine Academy. He serves as the Vice Chair of the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine & Science. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, American College of Podiatric Medicine, American Professional Wound Care Association, and National Academies of Practice/ Podiatric Medicine Academy. He is board certified in: podiatric sports medicine, podiatric medicine, pain management, wound care, and disability analysis. He has volunteered on many physician panels for college student organizations, as well as served as lead podiatrist for running and athletic events supervising podiatric medical students and residents. Dr. Dutra is Clinical Director for Healthy Athletes Fit Feet Program, Northern California Special Olympics. He was previously in solo private practice in San Leandro for 20 years. He is as a pool podiatrist for Kaiser East Bay Area. He has many years of coaching experience in youth soccer, basketball, baseball, and high school boys and girls tennis teams. He was an athletic trainer for De La Salle High School in Concord, University of California at Davis, and California State University, East Bay. Areas of research include podiatric sports medicine/ biomechanics and diabetic wound care. Dr. Dutra served as Assistant Director of Student Health Services and podiatric consultant at California State University, East Bay. He is a national lecturer in sports medicine.

Dr. François Allart is a third-generation foot specialist who has honed his expertise thanks to many years of studies, he started as a foot orthotic technician with three years of laboratory fabrication and supervision training in research in orthotics design in growing children towards treating permanently certain foot pathologies. Then followed the studies in podiatric medicine and years of research and development in the field of podiatry.

Three generations of passion.
Dr. Allart’s passion has been passed down from his father, who was also a podiatrist, and his grandfather, who manufactured orthopedic shoes for amputees in Belgium. This family involvement led him to pursue his calling with great enthusiasm, and his determination and dynamic personality have served him well throughout his career as a practicing podiatrist, university teacher and R&D researcher and podiatric lobbyist for the advancement in podiatry in Quebec and Canada. His work and dedication have earned him different honorary recognitions in his country and abroad.

In 1988, Dr. Allart left for the United States in order to study podiatry at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM). At the time, there were no podiatric medicine program in Québec or Canada.

During and after his studies, he acquired additional expertise in pediatric podiatry (podiatry for children and teenagers) and biomechanics with different medical field specialists including radiologists and pediatricians in the research of new treatments for different podiatric biomechanical ailments in children and adults. The preventive medicine aspect was a significant factor in his interest in pediatric podiatry and R&D research.

When he returned to Canada in 1993, Dr. Allart and his father founded the Québec podiatric medicine clinic, where he also established his own orthotic manufacturing and research laboratory which benefited from his scientific research in the field of the orthotic development.

Since that time, he has been working tirelessly to gain recognition for the expertise of podiatrists among the Québec medical community and among government health institutions. His involvement has led to significant growth in the profession in Québec. From 1995 to 2005, he served as an Administrator, Vice-President and then President of the Ordre of Podiatrist of Quebec. During his terms in office, he was instrumental in the adoption of numerous regulations respecting the practice of podiatry in the Québec legislature, including legislation related to DPM title and education, medications, podiatric orthotics surgery and radiology. As a member of the Canadian Podiatric Medical Association, he is involved in the standardization of podiatric medicine in Canada and free inter-provincial labor mobility.

In 2003, after many years of hard work and negotiations, Dr. Allart finally realized his goal and dream of establishing a podiatric medicine program at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR).

This accomplishment and his work in the field earned him an honorary doctorate degree in 2008.

In fact, until recently a number of the courses were given by members of the NYCPM, and an internship in the United States was included in the Canadian program.

From 2006 to 2020 Dr. Allart has been involved in different university programs committees to keep the program at par with the population needs. During this time he also implemented at the university the podiatric foot orthotic laboratory for teaching and research. During those years he was also involved as co-director with Dr. Hetherington of Philadelphia for the scientific committee for the International foot association (FIP).

Since 2020 Dr. Allart is now totally dedicated in patient care and R&D in the podiatric biomechanics field.

Selenia Iachelli graduated from the University of Alberta with her Masters in Physiotherapy in 2012. She completed her bachelors at the University of Nebraska in Nutrition Exercise Science while playing Division I NCAA soccer. Selenia was captain of her team for 3 years of her collegiate career. Selenia represented Canada at the world stage as she was a member of the Canadian Women’s National Soccer team both youth and senior for 12 years. She most recently played in the FIFA Women’s World Cup here in Canada in 2015. Upon graduation, Selenia played professionally across Europe and North America for numerous clubs including the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s team.

Having been a professional Athlete, Selenia is well aware of the physical demands of being active. She sustained many injuries herself throughout her career and understands what it takes to return from injury and to stay healthy. Selenia brings a unique perspective in managing various injuries and providing rehabilitation programs. Through a combination of manual therapy techniques and progressive exercises, she focuses on the correction of muscle imbalance and movement patterns in order to restore proper biomechanics for both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. Selenia specializes in Shockwave therapy, Dry needling, joint mobilizations, soft tissue and fascial techniques and focuses her attention on patient education and injury prevention.

Selenia is passionate about helping her patients set and achieve realistic and effective goals so that they can return to the everyday activities they love.

Dr. Irene Davis is the founding Director of the Spaulding National Running Center, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Davis received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts, and in Physical Therapy from the University of Florida. She earned her Masters degree in Biomechanics from the University of Virginia, and her PhD in Biomechanics from Pennsylvania State University. She is a Professor Emeritus in Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware where she served on the faculty for over 20 years. Her research is focused on the relationship between lower extremity structure, mechanics and injury. Her research also extends to the development of interventions to alter faulty mechanics through gait retraining. She has been studying the use of wearable sensors in both the evaluation and treatment of injured runners. Her interests also include the effect of minimal footwear on mechanics and injury. Dr. Davis has received funding from the Department of Defense, and National Institutes of Health to support her research. She has given over 350 lectures both nationally and internationally and authored 160 publications on the topic of lower extremity mechanics during walking and running gait. She has been named one of the 50 Most Influential People in Running. She is a Fellow and Past President of the American Society of Biomechanics, and the 2019 ASB Borelli award winner. She is also a Fellow and past Vice President of the American College of Sports Medicine and the 2021 DB Dill Lecturer. Finally, she is a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Kenton Marshall joined Gallagher at the beginning of 2015 and has worked through progressive roles over the past six years. Kenton has a focus on Medical Malpractice and mid-sized commercial accounts and is based out of Calgary, Alberta. He has worked with the CPMA membership for three years and is the preferred broker for Podiatrists across Canada.

Kenton is a graduate of the Business Administration Program from Mount Royal University. He is the co-author of peer reviewed risk analysis and mitigation academic papers.
